Introduction

Kurobane Junior High School is located in the eastern part of Ohtawara city in the northern part of Tochigi prefecture.  There are 197 students in 9 classes including 2 special education classes.  The school area is as large as almost half of the city, so almost all the students come to school by bus.  The student who lives the farthest from school must travel for 40 minutes to get to school. The reason why this school has such a huge school area is because of the unification of schools.  There used to be 4 junior high schools in this area, but each school was very small and estimated to only get smaller because of depopulation.  The city government decided to unify the 4 schools into one as a new junior high school in 2010.  That was the birth of Kurobane Junior High School.  The location of the school was chosen because it was next to the Kurobane athretic park, which has a track and field, malti-perpose field, tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool.  It is very useful for students to take part in verious sport.  The new school building was designed to reflect the local people's wishes for a new modern school for a new era in this area's history. The entrance hall for students is especially remarkable.  It is based on the design of early British style school buildings because the education system in Japan came form Britain at the end of 19th century.  It reminds people of their connection to people in the past in their intention to share hope with children.
